Solar electric generating pavements, wind turbines, solar panels on the roof of all new builds and turbines if the building can take them.
Wave power, hydro electric, if sustainable and suitable to the environment.
We should really have very little need for fossil fuels by now the technology is available to have left them behind .
Local micro generation of power and diversity of production should be where we are heading at a fast rate, so that there is no need for a national grid. This would prove  safer from sun spot and solar storm activity, tsunamis and geological upheaval.  Giving all the human race a better chance of survival from most Catastrophic changes to our planet> As well as  more independence from dictatorial goverment control.

Unfortunately  what is missing, is the will to do it, due to the greed of the people who have all ready invested in fossil fuels and dirty energy.
The control of goverment by big business and bankers, Coupled to the nature of governments and the people who seek to join them  to govern is to impose their will, rather than see them  selves  as the servants of the people which is the true role of the people given the privilege of joining any goverment. 
We the people are  being held to ransom by big business, the governments, the rich and greedy.
Every country has them in one form or another  and in every country it is the poor and under classes that  suffer at the hand of the rich and powerful.
Who destroy the world for their own gains. with sort sighted get rich quick agendas, often defended and protected  by religious leaders who pontificate myths and legends to  brainwashed populations to maintain the status of the leaders and blind the populaces to the wanton destruction of the environment and the purity of life .
